New Zealand has always been perceived as one of the best countries to live in, in terms of the great outdoors lifestyle, safety, relative wealth, a strong sense of community and a high standard of education. All of these factors have been reinforced by two very recent research papers. The first is by the Global Age Watch Index 2014 which ranks New Zealand as the 10th best country in the world to grow old in – higher than Australia and the UK. Ranking is made in terms of social and economic wellbeing and covers 96 countries, representing 90% of the over 60s. The report was undertaken by the University of Southampton and researchers at Help Age International which made international comparisons in four areas – income security, health status, personal capability and enabling social environment. The second was in the 2014 OECD Better Life Index. New Zealand ranks among the top countries in a large number of topics the OECD has identified as essential, in the areas of material living conditions and quality of life, scoring highly in sense of community, life satisfaction, safety and scoring first among all OECD countries in health
